Tennessee Newspaper Hall of Fame Recognizes Charlet

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Tennessee Press Association announced that among five persons to be posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Newspaper Hall of Fame in November is James E. Charlet, who pioneered centralized printing of small newspapers and the move to offset printing and cold-type production.

President of the TPA in 1960-61, Charlet formed the family-owned newspaper group that included the state's oldest paper, The Leaf-Chronicle, in Clarksville, and 16 weeklies in nine counties.

The group was acquired in the 1970s by Multimedia, which was itself acquired by Gannett in the 1990s.
