By: E&P Staff Web press manufacturer Tensor Group in Woodridge, Ill., announced the sale of a 48-unit press to a Norwegian publisher and the expansion of press installations in Turkey.
NR1 Adressa-Trykk (a joint venture between Norwegian newspaper printer/publishers Adressa-Trykk and NR1 Trykk) ordered a 12-tower Tensor T-400 press for its new facility in Orkanger. The 48-unit press, due to begin installation in the fourth quarter of the year, will print more than 20 newspapers with circulations that run between 3,000 and 20,000 copies, as well as a large number of coldset commercial products, according to Tensor.
The shaftless press includes two Tensor H-50 HD folders, each capable of handling 12 webs with the help of independently driven RTFs. Each folder comes equipped with shaftless commercial quarter folders, and the primary folder has an upper former for sectioned tabloid newspaper production. Three steep-angle formers have motorized tabloid slitters and shaftless stitchers for newspaper and commercial products. A gluing system is to be installed on the main folder.
Press units use a full helical gear train and class 13 gears on the main cylinder, which are designed to "virtually eliminate" dot distortion, according to the company. The units are equipped with spray dampeners, motorized ink fountain rollers, EPG remote inking with pre-setting, and Technotrans pumped ink-supply system and ink levelers. Press maintenance is handled with a PDM TwinTurbo web-cleaning system and a vacuum dust-collection system.
DCOS color-to-color and cutoff controls for all 12 webs are controlled from four press-control consoles. Tensor shaftless infeeds control the webs fed from the 12 automatic flying pasters situated at right angles to the press line, with turnbars located under the towers.
The press will be able to produce 96 tabloid pages of four color at 35,000 copies per hour and 64 pages at 40,000 copies per hour. The DCOS production management system logs performance, maintenance and production data of each product run and assists in scheduling the constantly varying jobs.
The press "is probably one of the most highly automated and user friendly presses Tensor has sold," said Tensor President Don Gustafson.
Turkish printer IMAJ A.S. ordered a T-400 four-high tower and two-high tower for its seven-unit, two-folder Tensor press in order to increase production and color capacity. The new units will be added this summer, and will permit the company to print up to 32 four-color broadsheet pages at speeds of up to 70,000 copies per hour.
Another Turkish printer, Ertem Basim, purchased a second Tensor T-400BE four-high tower and a second H-50 folder with quarter folder in order to double its production of full-color products. The new units also are to be installed in summer.
