By: E&P Staff Spanish-language newspaper Hoy Nueva York and its weekend counterpart, Fin de Semana, have made a fast transition onto their new Los Angeles-baased owner's editorial system.
ImpreMedia, which holds 35% of the U.S. Spanish-speaking market, bought the New York papers eight months ago from Tribune Co., and then proceeded to move them onto the Tera GN3 editorial system. System developer Tera Digital Publishing, based in Milan, Italy, implemented the 90-day migration.
Tera also announced it is the first vendor to integrate into its software the new Web feeds from The Associated Press, which is already being used at The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn.
The AP feeds deliver text, photos, graphics and video, and use metadata classification to allow editors to quickly find, place and classify news items. The feeds can also be sent on to readers, who can access the content on a newspaper's Web site. Online editors can use the classification to create a wide range of pages and sections designed to appeal to local audiences, and to advertisers trying to reach them, a Tera spokesperson said.
To implement the AP's Web feeds interface, Tera created a feed definition in the IFSReader of its newspaper system. The implementation can be accomplished at any GN3 site running current software, and Tera intends to convert all of its 18 U.S. newspaper customers to the new AP Web feeds this year.
Tera also announced it hired John V. Juliano as manager of worldwide marketing and reseller sales. He will be based in the U.S.
Juliano has worked with the newspaper industry since the late 1970s, when he was with Digital Equipment Corp. He also founded JJCS, which he led for 25 years. The company supplied bridges from older installed editorial systems to new desktop pagination products. JJCS also worked with European vendors as they entered the U.S. market. Juliano's earlier experience included working on some of the first projects to publish from a database and writing one of the first prototypes to fully paginate classified ad pages, complete with display ads.
