By: E&P Staff More papers than ever are declining to endorse political candidates for election -- and now at least one major candidate says he won't work to win endorsements from papers that do.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is in a tight race in the Republican primary with U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, will not meet with newspaper editorial boards to win their endorsement in the March 2 primary, Jason Embry reported Monday on the "Postcards" blog of the Austin American-Statesman.
"In the final weeks of the campaign, a better use of the governor's time is to continue traveling the state talking to Texans about the issues that are important to them," Embry quotes Perry spokesman Mark Miner as saying.
A spokeswoman for Hutchison was noncommittal about attending the editorial board interviews, Embry reported.
It isn't just that the candidates see the visits to newspapers are big expenditures of campaign time, Embry writes: "But many Republicans believe that their voters are distrustful of newspaper editorial boards."
