By: Jim Rosenberg The Associated Press announced at Nexpo 2002 here that it will offer the content of The Wire -- its multimedia Internet news service for members -- in a manner that duplicates the design and branding of member Web sites and delivers daily site-traffic statistics.
Though it retains the look-and-feel of publishers' and broadcasters' Web sites, CustomWire content will be selected, presented, and updated by the news service on member-branded Web pages.
Members that sign on for CustomWire can forgo investment in hardware, bandwidth, and staff, according to AP, which will insert its multimedia content in members' templates using Java servlet technology. The templates allow members to control on-page placement of the 12 categories of streaming news, photos, audio, and video, as well as retain control over Web site navigation and ad placement.
The launch of CustomWire follows testing at
The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, the
Richmond (Va.)
Times-Dispatch, and
The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La. Current users of The Wire may test an upgrade to CustomWire through the end of the year.
