'The Arizona Republic' Helps An Inner-City School

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Arizona Republic launched a three-year program with a $120,000 grant to help inner-city Phoenix students improve their reading skills.

The idea behind 1-2-3 Read is for volunteer Republic staffers to assist students in the first through fifth grades to improve their reading skills. At the same time, the paper will run a three-part series shedding light on the challenges Phoenix schools face.

Creighton Elementary was chosen as the beneficiary school. At Creighton, 65% of third graders are below grade-level reading, 95% of students qualify for a free or reduced lunch, 79% of students are English-language learners, and roughly 50% of students do not go on to complete high school.
