By: Press Release | The Boston Globe
Boston, MA, Jan. 13, 2012 – On Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012,
The Boston Globe will publish
a special magazine about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s expansion with the opening of a $114 million new wing designed by architect Renzo Piano. Titled “The Gardner Grows,” the 48-page full-color glossy magazine will appear in all editions of The Boston Sunday Globe and in
The New York Times in greater Boston and Manhattan. The magazine will also be available online at
www.bostonglobe.com/gardner.
The new wing, which opens to the public Jan. 19, is a milestone for the museum, more than doubling its footprint. The glass-and-copper-clad contemporary structure includes a new concert hall, café, gallery space, gift shop, artists’ apartments, and more. The Globe’s special magazine offers an in-depth look at the expansion, including the challenges museum director Anne Hawley faced in order to see the project through. Boston Globe arts reporter Geoff Edgers describes Hawley’s multi-year journey to bring the Gardner into the modern era and the storms she weathered along the way.
“The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is beloved in Boston, and this expansion is a striking change for a century-old institution,” says Rebecca Ostriker, arts editor for The Boston Globe. “With this magazine, Globe writers, editors, photographers, designers, and graphic artists take readers inside the new wing and explore all it has to offer.”
Other features in the magazine include an inside look at the new Calderwood Performance Hall, a unique, cube-shaped concert space with audience seats on all four sides around the stage. Globe classical music critic Jeremy Eichler delves into the Gardner Museum’s storied musical legacy and examines what went into the new hall’s acoustics and intimate design.
With the Gardner’s expansion, one cannot forget the unconventional and vivid woman who created the museum. Arts reporter Mark Feeney surveys the colorful life and legacy of Isabella Stewart Gardner. Plus, there’s a room-by-room guide to the new wing, and reflections from Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Sebastian Smee on the way the expansion reframes the museum-going experience.
A special online package at
www.bostonglobe.com/gardner offers an interactive look at the new wing, with videos, photo galleries, graphics, and more.
