By: E&P Staff The Dallas Morning News announced several newsroom promotions today.
The News will have nine new department heads. They are: Ryan Rusak (Government); Kamrhan Farwell (Education); Dave Hiott (Public Safety); Eric Nelson (General Assignments); Nancy Visser (Local); Tim Connolly (Foreign/National); Chris Siron (B-Section); Mede Nix (Zone Editor); and Martin Melendy (A-Section)
Ryan Rusak's new duties as government department head for the News will include the supervision of coverage of government and politics, both local and national. Rusak will coordinate with the News' Austin bureau, as well as the paper's D.C.-based government reporter, and will work with the paper's editor over the Dallas city and county government team.
Kamrhan Farwell's responsibilities as head of the education department at the News will include the coordination of education stories from Dallas and throughout the region. The reports will range from investigations to extracurricular activities, and will place an emphasis on stories that will connect with both parents and students.
As Public Safety Department Head, Dave Hiott will work to expand the coverage of the public safety in Dallas, as well as fielding breaking news from the public safety reporters throughout the region and state.
Eric Nelson has previously worked in the metro section of the News. In addition to his new role as the head of the general assignments department, Nelson will continue on in his duties as the newsroom's liason for Sunday enterprise, and will supervise the team's Web champion. In his new role at the News, Nelson will oversee most of the news department's general assignments, reporters, and editors, as well as local news columnists and special reporters.
As local department head, Nancy Visser will be the early manager of the news operation of the paper. Her responsibilities will include local local news planning, budgeting, and early morning coordination with the online, Channel 8, and visual teams.
Tim Connolly, the new foreign/national department head, will work with the wire services and the News staff resources dedicated to Mexico/the Texas border region in order to coordinate national and foreign reports, as well as immigration-related reports.
As B-Section Department Head, Chris Siron will be responsible for the completion of the News' zoning operation, and will assist in the afternoon budgeting and coordination process among the other B-section editors. Siron will continue on with his responsibilities as manager of the night local production desk, and as the key intermediary between the daytime and nighttime B-section desks.
Mede Nix, the new Zones Department Head, will be the manager of the zoning operation. She will supervise and manage the municipal reporters throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area and coordinate with the education, public safety and general assignments editors, who will have local news reporters working stories of zone interest.
As A-Section Department Head, Martin Melendy will be responsible for the editing and presentation of state, national and foreign news inside the A-section, and for helping pull together front-page packages on national and foreign stories.
Additionally, the Dallas Morning News promoted the following individuals:
Mede Nix has been appointed Zones Editor, and will be the manager of the paper's zoning operation.
Kit Lively has been appointed Education Enterprise Editor, and will
supervise the paper's Dallas-based education reporters, as well as
throughout the region.
Ana Barrera has been appointed Deputy Foreign/National Editor, and will work to expand the supervision of the News reporters covering Mexico, the Texas border, and local immigration issues. Barrera will also continue on in her duties as chief liason with reporters and editors at Al Dia.
