'The Day' Comes for Timothy Dwyer -- Named Editor

By: Timothy C. Dwyer, who has held a variety of reporting and editing positions at The Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and The Boston Globe, has been named executive editor of The Day, the newspaper announced Monday.

Dwyer, 52, is now a writer with the Post's metro staff. He will begin his new job on July 30, taking over for Lance C. Johnson, who worked at The Day for more than three decades before taking an early retirement offer.

Gary Farrugia, editor and publisher of The Day, said Dwyer is an experienced, visionary journalist.

"He's got a very, very diverse background," Farrugia said. "He's done the 'big picture' stories, but he's also done the grass-roots reporting."

The Webster, Mass., native has covered the Washington, D.C., sniper trial, President Bush's second inauguration and Hurricane Katrina for the Post. He has also served as a Web reporter and television contributor for the newspaper.

At the Inquirer, he served as sports editor and New Orleans bureau chief, and also worked in the paper's London bureau. He joined the Globe after graduating from Northeastern University in Boston, covering police, prisons, the state legislature and urban affairs.

Dwyer is married to Karen Funfgeld, an assistant news editor at the Post. He plans to move to the New London area with his wife and son.

The Day, with a circulation of about 40,000 in southeastern Connecticut, owns eight weeklies and has an equity stake in seven others.

The Day Publishing Co. is one of the region's few independent newspaper companies. It is administered by a board that distributes a portion of the newspaper's profits through a charitable foundation.
