The Diversity Pledge Institute announces its official launch

The Diversity Pledge Institute (DPI), a new nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of diversity in journalism, announced its launch today.

DPI provides media organizations with a bespoke service that improves recruitment, retention and advancement of employees from diverse backgrounds, with a goal of increasing profitability, employee satisfaction and audience growth.

“At DPI, we want to address the diversity pipeline issue from both the organizational and individual perspectives,” said DPI founder and Executive Director Larry Graham. We believe diversity makes journalism stronger.”

The new organization also offers a free mentorship, training and advancement program for journalists, with an emphasis on journalists of color and members of the LGBTQ community. By providing hands-on training and coaching on career advancement at all levels, DPI is helping journalists find jobs, get promoted, become leaders and navigate newsroom politics.

“Working directly with hiring managers, DPI will accelerate the long-overdue and much-needed diversification of newsrooms, particularly in leadership positions,” said Jane Elizabeth, a veteran media leader who serves as senior adviser to DPI. “DPI’s involvement will make a major difference in successful recruiting, hiring and retention — especially for local newsrooms that currently struggle with those issues.”

The team at the Diversity Pledge Institute wouldn’t have reached this milestone without the support of media experts such as Sara Lomax-Reese, S. Mitra Kalita and URL Media, Cheryl Carpenter, Emma Carew Grovum, Jim Iovino, Douglas K. Smith, Brenda Velasquez and Orlando Watson.

DPI also owes a special thank you to its board of directors:

  • Alena Allen, the associate dean for research & faculty development and professor of law at the University of Arkansas School of Law.
  • Tim Wong, the product design manager for Animation Studio Technology at Netflix.

DPI will be hiring for full-time, part-time and consulting positions throughout the coming year.
