We’re excited to announce that we’re promoting Andy Rossback to senior editor, Storytelling. This move allows him to fully draw on his considerable strengths that span editorial and product so he can help us envision new story formats and new design directions for our home screen and articles.
Andy joined The Times in 2016, after he helped launch The Marshall Project, where he continued as an editorial designer for two years. When he joined The Times’s Digital News Design team, it was clear that Andy’s visual instincts, news judgment and technical skills would allow him to cover a lot of ground. He built relationships with editors, reporters, photographers, and designers across the digital and print operations.
Among several high-profile pieces he shepherded were the digital presentations for the momentous Trump taxes investigation, a visual report of a sprawling California homeless camp, and the devastation the opioid crisis brought to one Ohio high school. He teamed up with designers and developers in the newsroom to create the first tap story tool that was accessible to a wide group of editors. This project was an essential step in helping our visual report adapt to more vertical, mobile-optimized material.
He played a lead role in designing and shaping our early live blog format, which has since grown into a core product platform driving our daily coverage. He also helped lead a revitalization of the design of our desktop and mobile home screens, working with our News desk and with design and engineering partners in Product to introduce more packaging options that strengthened this important surface. More recently, he explored how we could redefine our weekend presentation, and he played a lead design and editorial role in the development of our vertical video tap format.
In his new role, Andy will help define how we think about our digital presentation in ways that enable editors to assign, produce and program the report at scale across our surfaces, especially the home screen. He will continue work across departments in the newsroom and with product colleagues to help identify opportunities and accelerate how we build and deploy emerging formats, tools and workflows.
Please join us in congratulating Andy on his new role.
