We’d like to officially welcome Michael Corkery back to Business after his successful, two-year stint in National.
Michael has rejoined as our finance editor and is already making an impressive transition from reporting to editing. In his first weeks on the job he has handled an avalanche of breaking news and newsy enterprise. There were the law firm stories after Paul Weiss settled with President Trump. Then there was the market swoon and Wall Street fallout. And more. Quite a start! Michael has handled it all with rigor and grace.
“Michael has all the makings of an excellent editor: an unerring eye for the most interesting way into a story and obvious deep care for colleagues and the broader institution,” says Jia Lynn Yang, National editor. “He’s going to be a total natural for the reporters lucky enough to work with him.”
On National, Michael wrote about crime, politics, extreme weather and more. He has a gift for writing about how all those things — and business — affect the people and places he writes about. His reporting about suicide in Montana, homelessness in Oregon, bike theft in Vermont, a Dollar General in Florida, and a beauty supply store in Illinois are testament to his deeply textured storytelling.
In Business, Michael covered retail and Wall Street. He joined The TImes in 2014 from The Wall Street Journal, where he also covered finance. He previously worked at The Providence Journal and The Burlington Free Press in Vermont.
Please join us in welcoming Michael.
