By: Joe Strupp Calling it a "rethinking," The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City launched a redesign on Monday that also included a reduction in size to a 44-inch Web width, the paper revealed in a release.

"This redesign came after months of intensive research, study and thought on how Oklahomans want to consume news," the release said. "A new site at TheNewOklahoman.com showcases the redesigned newspaper."

The redesign came about through the work of well-known designer Mario Garcia, who has done similar consulting for The Wall Street Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Kansas City Star.

"As part of the redesign, The Oklahoman joined a growing number of newspapers throughout the country choosing to publish in a narrower 44" web format," the release said. "While the height remains the same, this change narrowed the overall width of the newspaper by 1.5 inches."

The paper's announcement also claims the "redesign creates a better experience for readers. It addresses the different ways Oklahomans choose to use media. The new format offers more short form stories and breakout details for people who are time crunched but still eager to stay informed. It also continues to provide in-depth coverage for those deep-dive readers eager to get the complete story."

The paper conducted research with eight focus groups that included "local frequent and infrequent readers" to test the new design. "Participants described the redesign as more colorful, fresh, more modern, easier to read and more hip. One participant stated, 'This is the newspaper of the future,'" the announcement said.
