'The Oklahoman' To Cut 150 Jobs, Most Through Buyouts

By: Joe Strupp The Oklahoman of Oklahoma City plans to cut 150 jobs through early retirements and layoffs, the newspaper reported Thursday, adding that the cuts are part of new "cost-cutting measures."

Publisher David Thompson said in a story that "a downsizing of The Oklahoman's work force of about 1,100 people will be completed by the end of October, in two stages: retirements and a reduction in force."

The paper said that early retirement packages are being offered to 102 employees who are at least 55 years old and have worked at the newspaper for 15 years or more. Those employees have until Sept. 24 to decide whether to take the early retirement.

In early October, the paper states, it will begin layoffs that could result in 150 positions being eliminated through the retirements and forced departures.

"Despite a growing economy in Oklahoma City, The Oklahoman is being affected by the same forces that have roiled the newspaper industry, particularly at metropolitan dailies, in recent months," the paper reported.
"It really is a perfect storm,? Thompson said in the story.
