The Post and Courier announces strategic shift in print delivery schedule, reflecting digital growth and evolution

The Post and Courier, the South's oldest daily newspaper with roots dating to 1803, announced it will modify its print delivery schedule to five days per week, eliminating Monday and Tuesday delivery, effective April 7. This strategic decision reflects the publication's successful digital transformation while maintaining its commitment to high-quality local print journalism.

The change comes as The Post and Courier experiences significant digital growth, with digital subscriptions nearly doubling in the past four years. The publication reaches more than 2 million digital readers monthly, while its E-Paper, the digital replica of the newspaper, has shown remarkable adoption.

“This decision allows us to align our resources with evolving reader preferences while maintaining our commitment to high-quality journalism,” said PJ Browning, president and publisher of The Post and Courier. “While we're adjusting our print delivery schedule, we're simultaneously expanding our digital offerings and adding exclusive content to our Monday and Tuesday E-Papers.”

The enhanced E-Paper editions will feature expanded business, sports, national and world news coverage, along with additional content focusing on health, science and technology. Print subscribers will maintain full access to all content through the E-Paper and website seven days a week.

This move comes at a time when the newspaper industry faces significant challenges, with more than 3,200 U.S. newspapers closing since 2005, including nine in South Carolina between 2023 and 2024. The Post and Courier's strategic decision ensures its continued ability to serve its communities while investing in digital growth and maintaining five-day print delivery.

The company’s ongoing commitment to print is reflected in its recent multimillion-dollar investments in its state-of-the-art press facility. This investment supports not only the Charleston region but also enables the company's broader statewide expansion. The Post and Courier has successfully launched monthly and weekly print editions, while establishing robust digital coverage in Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Greenville, Spartanburg, Rock Hill, Pee Dee, Beaufort County and North Augusta. This unique approach combines traditional print presence with comprehensive digital coverage, bringing high-quality journalism to communities that have lost local news sources.

The delivery changes will help optimize resources to support the long-term sustainability of The Post and Courier's journalism mission across South Carolina. To support readers through this transition, The Post and Courier is offering Digital Discovery sessions, both virtually and in person, to help subscribers learn how to maximize their digital access. In addition, the newspaper published a comprehensive “How to Use the E-Paper” guide available in the newspaper, online and at the Digital Discovery sessions. These sessions can be accessed at postandcourier.com/DigitalDiscovery.
