The Record, the flagship newspaper of North Jersey Media Group, was awarded two first-place medallions and three merit awards in the Society of Silurians 2014 Excellence in Journalism Awards Competition. One of the oldest press clubs in the U.S., the Society of Silurians will hold its awards presentation dinner on May 15 at The Players Club in New York City.

The Breaking News Medallion was awarded to The Record for its coverage of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey by reporter Shawn Boburg and columnist John Cichowski.  The paper’s news-breaking reporting of events surrounding the lane closure scandal at the George Washington Bridge has helped lead to multiple investigations. The award also cited Boburg’s exclusive on how the Authority quietly sold the trademark to the World Trade Center’s name decades ago for $10.

Alfred P. Doblin, The Record’s editorial page editor, won a medallion in the Editorial Writing/Commentary category for a series of editorials challenging the Archdiocese of Newark for ignoring the behavior of a child-abusing priest.

The Record also received three coveted merit awards, including one in the Public Service category for its series “Suburbia's Deadly Secret” by Rebecca D. O’Brien and Thomas Mashberg, on the spread of heroin through North Jersey.  The series recently was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

Photography merit awards were won by Tariq Zehawi in the Breaking News Image category, for a striking photo of a relative of the victim’s reacting to news of a double homicide in Englewood, N.J., and by Amy Newman, who was cited in the Feature Photography category for her photo, “Nun Having Fun."

“Each of these acknowledgments is a reflection of a tremendously high level of work, not only by the winners, but everyone in the newsroom,” said The Record Editor Marty Gottlieb.

The Society of Silurians, an organization of distinguished veteran journalists, annually recognizes outstanding achievement for in-depth news coverage, investigative work, photography and opinion in all areas of journalism.
