By: Suzanne Rosenberg Today's picks of the best from the political campaign blogs: Twin Peaks and Todd Palin? Clinton?s advisers ignored Obama appeal and at least one vice presidential contender is good-looking. Karl Rove has choice words on Democratic VP choice, and why wasn?t Palin on the Sunday Talk Shows?

Juneau what I mean?
The Swamp

Jim Oliphant and Jim Tankersley of the Chicago Tribune are covering the Obama and McCain campaigns, respectively. In a back-and-forth for their blog The Swamp at the Tribune, they discussed weather and politics, or more pointedly, today?s Palin revelations and '80s music.

-- Oliphant: Whew. What a day. You know, we have seen the prom pictures. Sarah Palin was definitely a child of the 1980s. Do you know what '80s song I've been thinking of all day?

-- Tankersley: Umm... "Rock Me Like a Hurricane?"

-- Oliphant: Bristol's made up her mind. She's keeping her ba-by.

-- Tankersley: Papa don't ... fish?

-- Oliphant: Papa don't say anything when the Enquirer calls!

-- Tankersley: Papa, don't drink and drive? That's today's bonus second Palin family revelation: Todd's 1986 DUI arrest.

-- Oliphant: Swell. Anything else they have forgotten to tell McCain?

-- Tankersley: My best guess? Todd was the original inspiration for Agent Cooper on "Twin Peaks."

-- Oliphant: Well, that's where we are, all right. And that's one damn fine cup of coffee. Maybe David Lynch should direct "Juneau."

Clinton Aides Ignored Barack Obama?s Mass Appeal

By Mark Memmott and Jill Lawrence

The Clinton campaign?s communications director writes in today?s Washington Post that, many of Hillary Rodham Clinton's top campaign aides had no real clue about Barack Obama's appeal because they spent so much time in a "war room" trying to expose his weaknesses that they never heard him speak in person or saw for themselves how Democratic voters were responding to the Illinois senator. Memmott and Lawrence point out in today?s On Politics that Howard Wolfson also acknowledges that the Clinton team "scoffed" at the huge rallies Obama was holding, "mostly because we were not capable of producing them."

Raising old fears about Biden?s tongue getting ahead of him ? In Toledo today, the senator from Delaware said there's an "obvious difference" between him and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who Sen. John McCain has chosen to be his running mate on the Republican ticket. "She's good-looking," he told an audience at a local library, our Gannett colleague Nicole Gaudiano reports. Still, writes Nicole, at least one woman in the crowd thought the 65-year-old Biden could measure up against the 44-year-old Palin.

"You are gorgeous," she shouted at Biden.

Karl Rove on Joe Biden: ?Big blowhard doofus?

Karl Rove, as he appeared before the Maine delegation to the Republican National Convention in Minnesota's Twin Cities, offered this characterization of Biden: He's a "big blowhard doofus."

Palin's not on the Sunday talk shows?

In contrast to Texas Gov. George W. Bush?s announcement that Dick Cheney would be his running mate -- and Cheney only days later appeared on all five Sunday talk shows -- this year?s GOP vice-presidential selection was nowhere to be found on any of the shows this Sunday, observed Leslie Hoffecker from today?s Los Angeles Times Top of the Ticket. In fact -- unlike her Democratic counterpart -- she?s never appeared on any of the Sunday gabfests.

Asked today by CNN's Wolf Blitzer about criticisms of Palin's minimal experience with national security and foreign policy issues, former Tennessee Senator Thompson responded: ?Well, Wolf, I hate to break this to you, but you don't get national security experience by being on Sunday talk shows, and that's where a lot of these fellas get theirs.?

This morning, John McCain had this exchange with Wallace on ?Fox News Sunday?:

MCCAIN: You know, one commentator said, well, she has never been on "Meet the Press."

WALLACE: I didn't say that.

MCCAIN: Well, I hope that she's on your program first. No, she doesn't live inside the Beltway. She doesn't -- she and her husband don't go to the Georgetown cocktail parties. But they do live a life of a wonderful family. He's -- they've had a small business. They are just really good, down-to-earth people who understand the challenges that we face. So in all due respect to my friends that say that she has never been on some of the inside-the-Beltway activities, I say, "Thank God."
