SAN DIEGO — Jan. 1, 2012 — To recognize exemplary impact to San Diego throughout the year, The San Diego Union-Tribune is today beginning a new tradition with the launch of the inaugural U-T Person of the Year, which will honor a person or category of persons for an outstanding contribution to the region.

The 2011 U-T Person of the Year is awarded to “the Marine,” honoring all San Diego-based Marines for their collective sacrifice and service at home and abroad.

“We’ve established the U-T Person of the Year to recognize the tremendous impact one may have on San Diego, or even the world at large from right here at home,” said John Lynch, vice chairman and CEO of The San Diego Union-Tribune. “We are extremely proud of the role the Union-Tribune plays in building stronger communities across our region, and pledge to strengthen our commitment to San Diego through programs like the Person of the Year.”

San Diego serves as the West Coast hub for Marine ground and air forces, and with approximately 56,000 Marines stationed throughout the county, members of the Marine Corps have served a half-dozen or more tours of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The Union-Tribune honors the Marine as the inaugural U-T Person of the Year not only for dedication to serving our country, but also for exemplary community service as our fellow neighbors, family members, friends and community participants, continued Lynch.

The U-T Person of the Year will be announced each January 1 within the pages of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Winners, whether an individual or category of individuals, will be selected based on their San Diego ties and community impact or service within the current calendar year.
