In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many Times-Picayune staffers couldn’t return home. Some were separated from their families. And the future of their newspaper, published since the waning days of Andrew Jackson’s presidency, was, like the city itself, in jeopardy. Still, former managing editor Peter Kovacs recalls that rocky period nearly a decade ago as “one of the most professionally fulfilling eras.”
