WASHINGTON—February 27, 2012—The Washington Post today introduces the “WP Politics,” a new app for iPad available now on the App Store. Ideal for both the general voter and the political junkie, the WP Politics App delivers an engaging news experience that showcases The Post’s definitive, award-winning political coverage in a rich iPad experience offering photos, graphics, animation and video.
“The Post has long been the national leader in political news coverage. With our new iPad application, we're bringing our expertise, depth, analysis and original reporting to a platform that will enable us to engage our readers in whole new dimensions,” said Marcus Brauchli, Executive Editor, The Washington Post. “With extraordinary new tools and features built around data, some of it going back two centuries, users of the WP Politics App can stay informed on the issues, candidates and dynamics of the 2012 election in an entirely new way and get beyond rhetoric and beyond spin.”
Adds Beth Jacobs, General Manager of Mobile, The Washington Post, “We believe we have created one of the most comprehensive and immersive political apps in the mobile space today – one where users can see, hear and interact with our content in an informative yet entertaining way. And like our other mobile products, The Post’s politics app for iPad is a rich, visual experience specifically designed to allow users to access The Post’s in-depth content in a manner that is unique to the device.”
One of the app’s features is an animated page that uses motion graphics to show how candidates' views have changed on issues ranging from the economy, foreign policy, abortion to other major issues of the campaign. The tracker also shows, with one glance, how candidates compare to one another and whether their positions have changed over time.
Each day, the app’s home screen will feature photo-based, curated headlines, as well as the top items each day from Chris Cillizza's must-read political blog, The Fix, and from Ezra Klein's agenda-setting policy writing on Wonkblog. It also will highlight the latest from The Fact Checker, the widely quoted blog that sorts political fact from fiction, and supplement the original columns with videos of candidates, so users can see firsthand how and if a candidate was misleading.
The WP Politics App also features
The WP Politics App is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore. A monthly subscription is available for $2.99 through In-App Purchase that gives users access to The Insiders’ Corner and any content featured in Campaign Files that has not been published in the last 48 hours, in addition to a variety of additional tools that will launch in the near future.
