U2 leader Bono and former Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof, now known nearly as much for their anti-poverty activism as their music, will guest-edit the Monday, May 10 edition of The Globe and Mail.

It's the first time the Globe and Mail has had guest editors, and for the Irish pop stars it will be their first experience guest-editing a North American newspaper. Bono has previously guest-edited The Independent in London and Vanity Fair, while Geldof guest-edited an Italian paper.

The Globe and Mail edition, and online features that day, will focus on "Emerging Africa," the newspaper said. It will include content and commentary from well know Africans and activists from around the world, the paper added.

The Globe is partnering with ONE, the organization created by Bono and Geldof to explore African issues in advance of the G8 and G20 summits, which will be held in Canada next month.

Kenyan activist Ory Okolloh will become a guest editor of globeandmail.com beginning May 10 to oversee stories and discussions in the days leading to the summit.

"As the only Canadian newspaper with an African bureau, The Globe has dedicated resources and reporters to deliver in-depth and ground-breaking news as it relates to Africa, its people and the issues that matter most," Publisher Phillip Crawley said in a statement. "Bono and Geldof have valuable insights and knowledge on the future of Africa, and The Globe is delighted to collaborate with them to bring a new perspective to Canada.

"I'm a huge fan of great journalism -- I can't wait to show up for work at The Globe," Bono said in a statement. "Our aim in this special edition is to crack down on a few stereotypes and showcase the opportunities surrounding the African continent, not just the problems."

Calling the Globe "one of the world's great papers of record," Geldof said it had "in a mad rush of blood to the head, agreed to let two Irish pop-singers edit their august journal for one special day, one special edition."
