By: E&P Staff Jorge Ochoa Martinez, editor of the daily El Sol de la Costa in the Guerrero state was shot dead last weekend, bringing to three the number of Mexican journalists murdered in January, Reporters Without Borders (RSF for its initials in French) reported Tuesday.

RSF said it was unclear whether the murder of Ochoa, 55, was related to his work as a journalist.

?Although Ochoa?s death confirms that Mexico continues to be the hemisphere?s most dangerous country for the media, the authorities are failing to respond adequately to a wave of threats against media personnel by presumed drug traffickers and, in some cases, by local officials,? RSF said in a statement.

According to the Paris-based free press group, 61 journalists have been murdered since 2000 and nine others have gone missing since 2003 in Mexico. The nation ranked 137th out of 175 countries in the 2009 Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.
