By: (AP) The Thomson Corp., once Canada's biggest newspaper owner, sold its last two newspapers -- the
Winnipeg Free Press and
The Brandon Sun, to Canadian Newspaper Co.
Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed.
Canadian Newspapers was founded by Bob Silver and Ron Stern, the owners of Western Glove Works, a Winnipeg-based apparel manufacturer.
Stern is also chief executive and part-owner of Alberta Newsprint Co. and St. Marys Paper Ltd.
Stern, a former publisher of
Vancouver Magazine, is chairman of Supreme Graphics Ltd.
The
Winnipeg Free Press, Manitoba's largest daily, has an average seven-day circulation of 126,324;
The Brandon Sun has a circulation of 15,389.
The sale is expected to conclude in early December, the companies said in a statement late Tuesday.
Thomson still has an indirect stake in its former flagship, the Toronto
Globe and Mail, through a 20% stake it holds in the newspaper's owner, Bell Globemedia.
Thomson started divesting itself of its numerous newspapers in the United States and Canada beginning last year.
