By: E&P Staff Media General's Richmond Media Group announced Wednesday that it has appointed Rick Thornton as "chief connector" at its Web site Richmond.com. His appointment is effective immediately.

Richmond.com, which was acquired by Media General in October 2008 and redesigned in April of this year, is primarily a culture and lifestyle Web site, spotlighting area restaurants, the arts, culture and nightlife, as well as local news.

"This Web site and the people who produce it have a very bright future," said Thornton, who will head up a full-time staff of eight. "I can't wait to begin working with Richmond.com's talented staff to further connect the community."

Thornton had previously lead Media General's video unit, which was focused on advertisers. He had been in that position since 2008. An MBA graduate of the University of Richmond, he preceded that position with six months on a product development team created by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Thornton has also served as a senior editor in the Times-Dispatch newsroom.

"Rick's job is to work with a talented staff to connect Richmond.com with our communities big and small, residents and organizations, viewers and advertisers, fun-seekers and information-providers," said Michael Fibison, head of digital operations for Media General's Virginia and Tennessee markets. "Connect, connect, connect."

In addition to Richmond.com, Media General's Richmond Group is composed of the Times-Dispatch, TimesDispatch.com, Richmond Suburban Newspapers, and Virginia Business.
