Three AFP Photojournalists Awarded Prizes in China International Press Photo Contest (CHIPP)

The Greek photographer Louisa Gouliamaki was awarded the Gold prize in the “General News Single” category in the 8th edition of the China International Press Photo Contest (CHIPP) grand prize for photojournalism, the theme of which was “Peace and Development”, for her photo of a child arriving in Greece aboard a ferry, having been evacuated from Benghazi in Libya. Based in Athens, she had already won 2nd prize for the Pictures of the Year 2012 competition in the“General News” category for the same photo.

The Japanese photojournalist Yasuyoshi Chiba was awarded the Silver prize in the “War and disaster story" category of the CHIPP for his series of photos on the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Posted in Nairobi in March 2011, he had been called in reinforcement in order to cover the disaster which had struck his country. He had also won First Prize in the “People in the News stories” category of the World Press Photo 2012 competition as well as Special Jury Prize in the Days Japan 2012 competition for the same reportage. Yasuyoshi Chiba is currently based in Sao Paulo.

The Bronze prize in the “General News Story” category was awarded to the Greek photographer Angelos Tzortzinis for his coverage of the demonstrations in Greece. Based in Athens, he also won 3rd Prize in the “Spot News” category in the Pictures of the Year 2012 competition for a photo of the same reportage. He had already won the Bronze prize in the “General News Story” category in the 2011 edition of the CHIPP.
