Three Comics Coming to Mobile Phones

Posted
By: E&P Staff SmashPhone, a Beverly Hills-based startup, is bringing to mobile phones the Creators Syndicate comics "Girls & Sports" and "The Meaning of Lila."

The company will also put the "Mostly Heads" comic on phones to try to "prove that SmashPhone can establish new unknown comic strips." The strip was developed by Darren Jones, a former E! Entertainment Network producer who co-founded SmashPhone with Robin Rowe, whose past jobs include serving as a research technologist at DreamWorks Animation.

"Girls & Sports," which runs in more than 175 newspapers, is by Justin Borus and Andrew Feinstein (who were profiled in E&P, February 2006). "The Meaning of Lila" was created by John Forgetta, editorial director at American Greetings. Both comics appeal to young audiences -- also a prime market for mobile phones.

The advertiser-supported SmashPhone said it will not charge customers to see the comics.
