Three newspaper companies made Inter@ctive Week's first Internet 500 list. Three individual newspapers also made the list.

Leading all publishers was Dow Jones & Co. Inc., which reported $160 million in online revenues. Inter@ctive Week ranked companies by the revenues generated from Internet activities for the four quarters ending June 1999. Dow Jones ranked 34th on the list.

Coming in at 98th was Knight Ridder with Net revenues of $25 million reported. Lee Enterprises is No. 223, with online revenues of $3 million.

Individual newspapers included were USAToday.com (ranked 130 with revenues of $13 million), The Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press (No. 392 with revenues of $150,000), and The Christian Science Monitor (No. 425 with Net revenues of $70,000).

Some newspaper companies that report online revenues in the millions were not included on the list. Editor John McCormick said some papers didn't reply to surveys from the magazine or weren't able to provide figures for the one-year period ending June 30.

McCormick says he also sought exact figures, not ranges, which many companies currently use to report Web revenues. Ernst & Young and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology assisted in defining the universe of Internet companies.
