THURSDAY LETTERS: Gallup Poll Gripes and Scalia's Gesture

Posted
By: E&P Staff Today's letters include several responses to yesterday's Gallup Poll indicating that, in a shift, a larger number of Americans are describing themselves as Democrats, as well as insight into the possible meaning of Justice Scalia's recent hand gesture.

But what is a Democrat?

Most people may like to think of themselves as Democratic but if the real agenda of the party is examined, it is simply socialism packaged with a clever party name: Democrats. If the question "Are you a socialist?" was asked few would answer in the affirmative.
Once again, a fait accompli poll with no details as to the questions asked or the makeup of those questioned.
Conclusion: Just another vacuous poll.

Did Scalia Tell Reporter to 'Fark Off'?

How is it that Justice Scalia's recent "hand motion" is being passed off as a simple "expression of displeasure?"

Listen, I grew up in Italy during my high school years, and have an Italian-American mom. I have used this hand gesture a thousand times in my lifetime (as have others in my extended family), and it always has had the same meaning ... which is to tell someone to "FARK OFF." The usual verbal taunt that accompanies this hand gesture is "vaffanculo!"

Anyone who doubts this need only ask any Italian or Sicilian.

How on earth is this meaning being bastardized down to mean "I could care less?"

There has got to be at least one other journalist out there (besides me) who knows the truth of what I write.

Incredible ... even E&P has missed the meaning entirely.

Sad.

Would be curious to know the demographics of the survey. Try as you might to sway public opinion, I am not buying it. Despite a lull in his popularity, Americans in my generation (40-something) are strong conservatives. You people in the media and Hollywood are so clueless anymore. We are not buying your spin on surveys, opinions and questionable news stories. Sorry to disappoint, but there is a large majority (think! last presidential election!!!!!!) that support this president and his efforts at protecting this country. A Democrat would never have the courage to protect this country. They are more worried about polls, getting re-elected at all costs, and self-promotion. At least we have a president who has the guts to do what is right. What a novel thought -- someone who is doing what is right for this country and not thinking about themselves. Imagine that.

Let us see, it seems that most polling companies want the results of their polls to say what they want them to say. So does this mean that once again polling was skewered [sic] in order for the results to be what you want -- favoring the Democrats?

Where was the poll taken -- in the big cities of the Northeast?
