THURSDAY'S LETTERS: To Zinsmeister or Winstonsmith?, 'Blade' Management Questions, Iraq in Editorials

Posted
By: E&P Staff In today's letters, a reader relates the Zinsmeister flap to Orwell's 1984, some questions regarding the Toledo Blade's firing of a reporter who leaked information to the Pulitzer Board, and dismay over Iraq pullout editorials.

RE: Paper May Take Legal Action Against Bush Aide

Sorry, the term isn't really "zinsmeistered." It's "winstonsmithed," after the character in George Orwell's "1984."

Editorial Boards Deluded on Iraq?

[Greg Mitchell's] good May 29 piece reminded me of Eric's Boehlert's "Lapdogs," which I just finished. Just when you think the big papers' editorial staffs are about to say "Enough!" they conclude, in effect, "Well maybe Bush somehow can straighten things out."

If Bush had ever really succeeded at anything, they might be right.

The habit of going along with this inept administration is ingrained.

Keep up the good work. I was especially impressed with your Downing Street Memo stuff a year ago this time. Incidentally, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune stuck its neck out on Downing Street ... and has, in my opinion, been vindicated.

'Blade' Managment Mistakes?

Ron Royhab, executive editor of The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, owes the entire membership of the Toledo Newspaper Guild an apology for insinuating in Editor & Publisher that the Guild had a role in sending a poison letter to the Pulitzer Board to somehow "advance bargaining." Now that the true author of the letter has been revealed, it seems Mr. Royhab was disingenuous in using the situation to discredit the Guild during contract negotiations. It didn't work. Shame on him.

(Full disclosure: I worked for The Blade as a reporter and editor from 1990-2002 and left on my own terms. I am a former secretary of the Toledo Newspaper Guild.)

[Management tries] controlling everyone that works [at the Toledo Blade]. They are nothing more than Kool-Aid drinkers. Best part, everything they print is bias and they can't give these wraps away. Most that take it are die-hard LIBERALS that love the likes of John Kerry, who servered in Vietnam and Marcy Kaptur, idiot rep in Congress.

Liberals Go to Church Too

"On the morality question, Gallup finds a wide split, ranging from 74% acceptance among liberal Americans to 18% among frequent churchgoers."

Why separate 'liberals' and 'churchgoers'? It makes it pretty clear that you do not think that liberals go to church. Interesting skew of the factual evidence ...
