'Times' After 'Times' for Cartoonist Charlos Gary

Posted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 12:00 am

By: Dave Astor "Working It Out" and "Cafe Con Leche" cartoonist Charlos Gary, who lost his St. Petersburg Times job this May in a cost-cutting move by the paper, has a new position at the Washington Times.

"Basically I'll be an informational-graphics artist again," he told E&P.

The Creators Syndicate cartoonist added: "I'm planning on learning the computer programs Dreamweaver, Flash, and AfterEffect at my own expense -- hopefully applying them to my graphics repertoire at the Times. I also plan on doing some weekly Flash animations for 'Cafe Con Leche' and posting them on my blog."

As E&P noted in an Aug. 12 story, the Trey character in "Cafe Con Leche" is dealing with being fired. Today's installment of that storyline (which began Sept. 8) can be seen here.

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
