By: Joe Strupp Subscribers to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, who have not gotten a paper delivered since last Saturday, will get four copies on Thursday. Those will be the undelivered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday editions.
As E&P reported earlier this week, the paper delivered its Sunday edition on Saturday, ahead of Hurricane Gustav, then was unable to distribute any further editions due to the storm and, after Monday morning, a power outage.
While the staff remained in their home building and covered the storm via the Web, only copies of the Monday paper had been printed, but were kept in a warehouse. PDF versions of the print product were written, laid out and posted online, but no print copies were delivered.
With power returning Wednesday, Dan Shea, managing editor/news, says the presses began rolling Wednesday afternoon on the as yet unprinted editions, with plans for a full Thursday edition as well.
"The press is up now, printing the Tuesday and Wednesday papers and we will have a regular Thursday paper," he told E&P. "Tomorrow, we'll deliver four newspapers in the morning. We are already getting calls that people want the paper."
With 50% of the city still without power, according to Shea, a print paper with stories, photos, and of course ads, is worth delivering.
