By: E&P Staff As part of its 80th anniversary celebration, La Opini?n, the nation's largest Spanish-language daily, announced in a ceremony in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday that it donating its archive and other historical material to The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, a collections-based research institute.
This Saturday, Mexican Independence Day, marks the 80th anniversary of the paper by Ignacio Lozano, a Mexican immigrant and grandfather of the current publisher, Monica Lozano.
"As La Opini?n is celebrating its 80th anniversary, we want to make sure that our news archives are well preserved and accessible to scholars and those interested in the rich history of Los Angeles' Latino community", Monica Lozano said in a prepared statement. "For eight decades, La Opini?n has been committed to informing readers and serving the Hispanic community with high-quality journalism. We want these historical materials to be available to the future generations."
Huntington President Steven S. Koblik, said scholars and students affiliated with the new Huntington-USC (University of Southern California) Institute on California and the West "will benefit richly from being able to conduct their research using this new collection."
Included in the donation are newspapers, photographs, memorabilia, awards and original documents. The archive will be housed in the Munger Research Center, the newest building of the Huntington's library complex, which opened to scholars in 2004.
