To See George W. Bush Replace George Washington in a Cartoon, Read This Story

By: Dave Astor One of the most memorable editorial cartoon images of the year has just been syndicated -- and the creator didn't even get a counterfeiting warning from the U.S. government.

The cartoon shows a real one-dollar bill with a caricature of George W. Bush replacing the picture of George Washington. The Bush figure says: "Replace the first with the worst!"

Titled "Bush Buck," the collage-type cartoon was created late last week by Gary Huck. "I got the idea from reading the economic news," he said, when reached today by E&P. "I took a buck out of my pocket and wadded it up to get the right wrinkling. Then I scanned it into the computer."

Huck noted that users of the new Photoshop software get a government warning when they try to scan money, but the cartoonist didn't in this case. He wonders if a one-dollar bill isn't worth enough these days to set off counterfeiting alarms. "Dollars are the new pennies," Huck joked.

The cartoon was also inspired by "the whole legacy thing" as Bush nears the end of his second term in office, said Huck.

Reaction to the cartoon? Huck replied that it's too soon to tell.

Huck's and Mike Konopacki's cartoons are distributed via the Huck/Konopacki Labor Cartoons syndicate, which has about 150 regular subscribers as well as a number of one-shot clients.
