TODAY'S LETTERS: Chris Matthews Interview, Soldier's Death in Afghanistan and Journalism Ethics

Posted
By: E&P Staff Readers responded today about E&P's new podcast feature. They also still had plenty to say today about the Chris Matthew's Interview on The Daily Show, the death of a soldier in Afghanistan as well as a column about jounalism ethics.

Jon Stewart Dismantles Chris Matthews
I don't know why there is such outrage around Stewart's grilling of Chris Matthews. I thought it was an appropriate response to a book that is a shallow treatise on survival. It's about time the media broke ranks with itself.

John Turner

This is great. First of all if your letter writers are a representative sample of viewers they show how ignorant they are. Jon Stewart is not now or ever been a media person. He has a live comedy show which is a parody of what passes for media journalism these days. I do not say that to mock Jon Stewart he says the same thing himself. It is not a real news show any more than Saturday Night Live was back when they were funny and did political skits. He even said in an interview awhile back he worries that young people today are saying they get their news from his show.

The second thing that is so funny is all the Liberals who thought he was so great when he was poking fun at the President and the Conservatives are now somehow insulted and irate that he is also doing this at the expense of Democrats. Wake up people the Democrats are winning and may soon have a lock on everything like the Republicans have had and now they will be the center of Jon and all the other political pundits.

Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
Thank YOU for your report on the lesbian soldier killed in Afghanistan after particularly advising her family to insist on an investigation if the event of her death.

This is an extremely suspicious "coincidence" and the Army ought to come clean on the facts she had found which apparently led to her death.

How far down the rabbit hole do ya wanna go?

...and how bad do you want to find the truth?

What cost are you willing to bear in order to find out what really happened and why?

Remember: She worked in disbursing.

The fact that she was gay is only a side story, however important.

...and Delahunt, Kerry and Kennedy are pulling the wool over your eyes.

Did you see this month's Vanity Fair? Have you been watching the Blackwater hearings?

An Inside Look at Six Ethical Issues
What our friend Ms. Couric did was far worse than her producer plagiarizing a story, she intentionally set out to deceive us.

That her producer plagiarized a story, isn?t my issue.

My issue is that ?Katie Couric?s Notebook? often wasn?t written by Katie Couric.

The notebook that stated every second sentence with,
?When I was growing up?, wasn?t written by Katie Couric at all.

I am not certain how I should have guessed that. The blogs about Norman Rich?s childhood are written by me.

When questioned, instead of, ?thinking about it, that wasn?t a very good practice?,

Ms. Couric defended her practice stating that Dan Rather had a producer write his editorials.

Furthermore, when I sign my name to a quarterly financial statement, I take responsibility for it.
The consequence of my lying involves going to jail.

Jail may be too harsh, but Couric not just the produced being fired would have been the correct action.
This incident was one of many, the previous one involved the intentional doctoring of her photos to make her look more slender.

Finally, is it ethical to badger a women with advanced cancer with multiple statement that she is about to die? (Mrs. Edwards)

There was a man who worked at CBS, Murrow I think was his last name. The question he asked fifty years ago is again relevant today.

?Have you at long last no decency??. Ms. Couric do you have any decency?

I am happy to report that is and will be a just ending to this. Like myself, the rest of the United State?s mindless viewers, who do not readily accept change have switched off Ms. Couric long ago. It is unfortunately that this crew carries with them the legacy to Mr. Murrow. He deserves better.

Ethics journalists? Not yet a oxymoron, but I can count the number of organizations or people who today still bring ethics to journalism.

You may agree, but for me the list includes, 60 Minutes, NBC and ABC news, Charlie Rose, Marvin Kalb, NPR, the NYT?s, the WSJ, and the Washington Post. It is a very very small percentage of those organizations claiming to practice ethical journalism.
