Toledo 'Blade' Cartoonist Debuts New Strip

By: E&P Staff Kirk Walters, editorial cartoonist for The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, for nearly 25 years, is now at work on an additional new strip, "Frogtown," which bowed in the Blade's comics section on Sunday.

Although his work is syndicated to 350 newspapers nationwide, including Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Chicago Sun Times and The Dallas Morning News, Walters has never been one to sit idly. In 1988 he created the hyper-local weekly strip ?Maumee Dearest? in the Blade, which deals with issues of area politics. He also illustrated a cartoon book about Toledo mayor Carty Finkbeiner.

?Frogtown? focuses on a character named Scooter McFlak, 35-year-old man who recently lost his job, his marriage, and his home. McFlak decides to pack up and move with his 7-year-old son, Mikey, from Miami back to his hometown of Toledo to live with his father, Jack, who has recently settled into his life as a widower.

?It?s a strip about dealing with perseverance, dealing with adversity,? Walters told the Blade?s Kirk Baird in a report about his new strip. ?Yes, you do hit bottom at some point, but you do recover.?

?I?m perpetually optimistic, which is a bad thing to be if you?re an editorial cartoonist,? Walters added. ?They?re usually dour and crotchety. I tend to look forward to the opportunities that present themselves.?

?Prince Valiant? was removed to make room for ?Frogtown? in the Blade?s comics pages.
