Toles Channels 'Mad' Magazine With Fold-in Cartoon

Posted Thursday, May 22, 2008 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff Tom Toles yesterday created a fold-in cartoon reminiscent of the work of Mad magazine's Al Jaffee.

In the drawing, The Washingon Post/Universal Press Syndicate creator showed Barack Obama saying "I'm unstoppable at this point!" and Hillary Clinton saying "This isn't futility. I'm having a blast!"

But when folded, the cartoon pictures the two Democratic presidential candidates clasping hands and exclaiming "Unity at last!"

Jaffee is one of three finalists for the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award as top cartoonist of the year. That honor will be presented this Saturday at the NCS gathering in New Orleans.

The Toles fold-in cartoon was also mentioned and pictured on Mike Rhode's Comics DC blog, which can be seen here.

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
