By: (AP) Tom Toles, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for
The Buffalo (N.Y.)
News, has been hired by
The Washington Post to assume the role the late Herbert Block held at the
Post for a half-century.
Toles, 50, is syndicated in 200 newspapers and has drawn regularly for the
New Republic and
U.S. News & World Report.
The
Post presented "the premier editorial cartooning position in the country," Toles said in Wednesday editions of the paper.
The
Post's editorial page editor, Fred Hiatt, called Toles "very funny, very smart, a very talented artist and a great journalist."
The cartoonist, who depicts his targets with misshapen heads and small bodies, considers himself a liberal. He won a Pulitzer in 1990.
In one recent Toles cartoon, a lone protester with a "Conserve Now" sign prompts someone in the White House to yell: "It's an attack! Transfer power to the shadow government!" A cluster of buildings in shadow are labeled "Oil Indus.," "Coal Unlimited," Drill Co." and "Burn Inc."
Block, a four-time Pulitzer Prize-winner who drew under the name "Herblock," died in October at age 91 after working for the paper for 50 years.
