Tom Ford, 'Tampa Tribune' Writer, Dies

By: (AP) Tom Ford, a sports writer for 29 years at The Tampa Tribune, has died of colon cancer. He was 52.

He died Tuesday in Mount Dora.

In his years with the Tribune, Ford covered sports in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties. He also worked as an assistant sports editor and sports copy editor.

Ford, a Tampa native, started his sports writing career at the Hollywood Sun-Tattler in 1967. He joined the Tribune in 1974, and his first beat was the University of Tampa.

"What can you say about a man who walked in off the street, asked for a chance, got it and became a star," said Tom McEwen, sports editor when Ford was hired.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lynn Ford of Mount Dora, and sons Sean and Shea of Tampa.

A memorial service is planned Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Hospice.
