By: Nekoro Gomes The Black College Communication Association announced the winners of the 2005 Historically Black Colleges and Universities "Excellence in Journalism" Student Newspaper Contest on Friday.
The Southern Digest of Southern University and The Meter of Tennessee State University took first-place awards for the Best Student Newspapers published weekly or more frequently, respectively.
The student newspaper contest honors work by student-run newspapers at historically black colleges in several news departments: features, sports writing, editorials, page design, photography, graphics, and cartooning.
Other student newspapers that received top awards at the event include Howard University's The Hilltop, North Carolina Central University's The Campus Echo, Grambling State University's The Gramblinite, and Jackson State University's The Blue and White Flash.
The awards were announced during the 8th annual HBCU Newspaper Conference and Job Fair in Greensboro, N.C., and presented the best student work. Staffers at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and other newspapers judged the event.
