By: E&P Staff Jean B. Clifton, president and chief operating officer of Journal Register Co., announced on May 5 that she is resigning, effective June 30. She is also leaving her position as a director of the company.
Edward S. Condra has been promoted to senior vice president, operations and will assume Clifton?s operating duties. He will be in charge of the clusters in the greater Philadelphia, Capital-Saratoga, and Mid-Hudson regions of New York and New England.
?I have decided that this is an opportune time for me to spend more time with my husband and young family,? Clifton said in a statement.
Clifton has been with the company for 20 years and has served as president and COO since 2005. She was also the company?s executive vice president and chief financial officer since its inception. She joined the predecessor to Journal Register in July 1986 and has 20 years of senior management experience in the newspaper industry. She began her career with Arthur Young & Co.

Condra has been the senior publisher of the suburban Philadelphia Cluster since 2003. He started his newspaper career when he joined Journal Register in 1991 as a classified sales representative at The Trentonian in Trenton, N.J. In 1997 he was promoted to publisher of The Troy (N.Y.) Record and was responsible for the total Capital-Saratoga Cluster from 1999 through 2000. In 2000, he was promoted again to publisher of the Daily Local News in West Chester, Pa.
