Toronto Paper Publishes Names of Canadians Missing in Tsunami

By: E&P Staff The Toronto Star today published a list of the Canadians missing and feared dead in the tsunami disaster in Thailand, despite the federal government's decision not to release the names out of concern for privacy.

The Star compiled its list using information from Canadian and Thai governments.

The paper's editor, after publishing the 150 names, said it's "a matter of overwhelming public interest" that the information be made available, indicating that relatives or friends in Canada can now alert authorities if they know if someone on the list is actually safe.

Other countries have released the names of their citizens feared missing or dead, revising them as people turn up safe or more are reported missing by their families.
