Toronto Star Newspapers Selects CCI NewsGate

By: Meg Campbell Toronto Star Newspapers has signed an agreement with Denmark's CCI Europe to implement CCI's NewsGate cross-media publishing system. The agreement, signed by Toronto Star Newspapers on behalf of itself and fellow Torstar subsidiary Metroland Media Group, includes up to 600 seats at four dailies and 16 weeklies.

NewsGate will replace CCI?s NewsDesk system at the Toronto Star. The Star, which was CCI?s first Canadian customer back in 1994, is now the first Canadian paper to move to the company?s cross-media solution, according to CCI.

The implementation, currently planned for 2009, will include The Hamilton Spectator, Guelph Mercury, Waterloo Region Record, and 16 weeklies from the Metroland West division of Metroland. Toronto Star Newspapers has the option to add up to 160 users at the Metroland community newspapers in the future.

According to the terms of the agreement, the system will be installed in Toronto with a disaster recovery site in Hamilton. CCI will assist in the initial installation, while Toronto Star Newspapers and Metroland will implement the rollout.

CCI NewsGate?s XML repository, based on an Oracle database in a disaster recovery environment, will provide the Toronto papers with safe and secure content management and storage, according to CCI. Pagination options include the CCI?s LayoutChamp, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe InCopy, and the system will allow The Toronto Star and Metroland properties to share content across newsrooms. The system will also include two-way integration with online publishing systems and support for Mac OS X workstations, according to the company.
