'Toronto Star' Publisher Buys Ontario Weekly Chain

By: E&P Staff Torstar Corporation announced Friday its community newspaper subsidiary Metroland Printing, Publishing & Distributing Ltd., has purchased Runge Publishing Inc., publisher of 18 community newspapers in eastern Ontario.

Among the flags in the purchase are the Renfrew Mercury, Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, and Kanata Kourier-Standard.

Torstar said the transaction is a continuation of Metroland's strategy of expanding its community newspaper business. Metroland publishes more than 75 community newspapers in southern Ontario.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Torstar's holdings include its flagship Toronto Star, Canada's largest daily newspaper; CityMedia Group, publisher of daily and community papers in southwestern Ontario; and the romance novel publisher Harlequin Enterprises.
