By: E&P Staff Toronto-based Torstar Corporation said Monday it was reorganizing its newspaper business by moving its CityMedia Group of 10 weeklies and three dailies led by The Hamilton (Ont.) Spectator inside its Metroland unit, which publishes about 100 community papers in southern Ontario.
The reorganization was effective immediately, and will include the departure of Spectator Publisher Pat Collins, who is also president of CityMedia. "Pat has served Torstar well," Torstar President and CEO Rob Prichard said in a statement. "He is a good business leader and publisher and we are grateful for all he has done."
Torstar said the reorganized Metroland will be renamed Metroland Media Group, and will be headed by Murray Skinner, the current president of Metroland.
"Metroland has a strong record of growth built on its culture of entrepreneurship and innovation," Prichard said. "By expanding the reach of Metroland to encompass CityMedia Group, we expect to simplify and strengthen our newspaper businesses, better serve our readers, advertisers and communities, and grow the profitability of the combined businesses."
Torstar also named Ian Oliver, president of its Halton Region group as the new executive vice-president of Metroland, group publisher for Metroland West and publisher of the Hamilton Spectator.
Torstar is publisher of Canada's largest daily newspaper, the Toronto Star. In addition its newspaper and online properties, it operates Harlequin Enterprises, the publisher of romance fiction.
