By: Jennifer Saba The owner of The Toronto Star is getting ready to launch an online classified site early next year through a partnership with the Santa Clara, Calif.-based
LiveDeal.com.
Torstar Digital, the online arm of the Torstar Corp., plans for LiveDeal Canada to be one of the country's largest classified sites. Torstar will re-direct all of its online newspaper classified activity through LiveDeal Canada. Though Torstar Digital will continue to post recruitment-classified advertising on Workopolis.
"This is Torstar's first free classified site," said Tomer Strolight, president of Torstar Digital. "Obviously, Craigslist helped inform our thinking a little bit." But Strolight said LiveDeal has more functionality in terms of search and posting ability.
LiveDeal Canada will post listings -- searchable by ZIP code -- from such categories as automotive, pets, and furniture. While the initial listing is free, consumers will pay to post photos or receive premium placing (however, there is a charge for auto listings). Currently, LiveDeal has 350,000 items on its U.S. site.
Additionally, Torstar announced it has taken a minority stake in LiveDeal with a $3 million investment.
