Even in McCain's home state, polls show tightening
The Trail
The Washington Post
By Steven A. Holmes
In the latest Cronkite/Eight survey in Arizona, McCain is leading Senator Barack Obama by only two points, 46-44 percent among registered voters, well within the poll's margin of error. Four other recent surveys in McCain's home state also show the presidential race tightening up in Arizona, and as Steven Holmes points out for The Trail, this is a potentially embarrassing position for Sen. McCain to be in. The potential that Senator McCain might repeat the performance of Al Gore in losing his own home state during the voting on Nov. 4 has prompted the Obama campaign to up their spending modestly in the state and led to Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the McCain campaign to state, "Listen, John McCain is going to win Arizona, He's never lost an election in Arizona and he won't this time, either."
Paper ballots ordered
By Mary Pat Flaherty
Late on Wednesday, a federal judge in Pennsylvania, ordered the state's polling places to offer emergency paper ballots when *half* the voting machines at a polling place don't work. Anticipating high voter turnout and a repeat of equipment problems which occurred during Pennsylvania's April primary, the judge ruled on a suit filed by the NAACP last week, that protecting "the constitutional right to vote" outweighed the minimal harm to counties that now must keep an adequate supply of paper ballots on hand, teach staff when and how to issue them."

The Washington Wire
Wall Street Journal
By Susan Davis
Susan Davis is reporting that admirers of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin can admire her all year round with the release of a 2009 Sarah Palin calendar which is filled with original photos of Gov. Palin taken by Anchorage photographer and friend Judy Patrick. Judy Patrick has created the 13-month calendar with photos of Gov. Palin wrapped in the American flag, pictures of her and her children and candid shots of the governor and her family in order to make enough money for she and her husband are in to purchase a $250,000 condo in Anchorage that is a financial reach for them. She stated that the project is entirely self-funded and won't benefit anything but her home-buying interests. "I'm hoping to sell enough calendars to make a healthy down payment." The calendar costs $15.95 and has an initial print run of 30,000.

"OMG" North Carolina Senate fight heats up
By Mary Lu Carnevale
According to Mary Lu Carnevale of the Washington Wire, "All hell is breaking loose in the North Carolina Senate race." Elizabeth Dole has criticized her challenger Kay Hagen for holding a fund-raiser in the home of a leading atheist. The Senate race has become increasingly contentious and negative primarily in the candidates' efforts to woo the evangelical Christian vote. The latest Dole ad opens with the line "A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a fund raiser in Kay Hagan's honor." It concludes: "She hid from cameras, took godless money." Dole is referring to an ActBlue fund-raiser in Boston which took place at the home of the writer Wendy Kaminer and her husband Woody Kaplan who is a member of Godless Americans. Hagan, an elder at the First Presbyterian Church, appeared at a Greensboro news conference yesterday with her family and minister and said lawyers for her campaign are preparing a cease-and-desist order demanding that Dole stop airing the 30-second ad within the next 24 hours. The Dole campaign for its part, stated that the "ad is 100% accurate," and according to the Greensboro News-Record stated further, "If the truth hurts, that's their problem."
