Tampa Bay Rays -- several endorse Obama
On Politics
By Mark Memmott
Straight from their victory in game 7 of the play offs sending them to their first World Series, several of the Tampa Bay Rays players took the stage at the Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's rally in Tampa on Monday. David Price, the rookie pitcher who earned the save in last night's game and teammates Fernando Perez, Carl Crawford, Cliff Floyd and Jonny Gomes all came to support nominee Obama. Mark Memmott of On Politics points out that Obama had said he's going to be rooting for the National League team, Philadelphia Phillies in the series. After Price introduced Obama as "the next president of the United States," the Illinois Senator said, " You know I am a unity candidate."
"Notable" endorsement for Salt Lake Tribune
The Swamp
Chicago Tribune
By Mark Silva
Obama has a majority of the nation's editorial page endorsements and some editorial boards have even switched from McCain to Obama. The Salt Lake Tribune's endorsement of Barack Obama is worth noting even given these numbers however, since President Bush carried Utah with close to 72 per cent of the vote during his re-election in 2004 (his best showing in any state). The Salt Lake Tribune came out with an endorsement of Barack Obama for president two weeks from Election Day and in its evaluation of the Republican ticket, criticizes "the impetuous McCain" for selecting Sarah Palin instead of Mormon Mitt Romney." The editorial goes on to point out McCain's bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin as reason enough to disqualify him for the presidency.
Bending under pressure, U of Nebraska cancels Ayers speech
The Los Angeles Times
Top of the Ticket
By Andrew Malcolm
The invitation went out to William Ayers to speak at the University of Nebraska last winter. He is the controversial '60's radical who helped to launch Obama's political career in his South Side Chicago living room. The University 's invitation to Ayers has been canceled after significant political and economic pressure on the University. Both Democrats, such as Senator Ben Nelson of Florida and Republicans, among them, Gov. Dave Heineman suggested that Ayers' past associations with a radical protest group should have discouraged such an invitation. The Omaha World Herald also reported that one group, the Gilbert M. and Martha H. Hitchcock Foundation, a large university donor, "threatened to halt its donations over the invite." The formal announcement by the university which was issued on Saturday, stated that the invitation had been rescinded for "safety reasons."
Mailboxes hold attacks on Obama
The Caucus
The New York Times
By Damien Cave
Early voting in Florida began on Monday with long lines at many polling places. Additionally, Robocalls against Obama and new harsh anti Obama literature in Florida mailboxes are also flooding the state as of Monday, reports Damien Cave of the Caucus. One flier on the economic crisis paid for by the Republican National Committee states," Barack Obama's solution is to take more of your money!"
First Goldwater, then Buckley, then Powell and now?
The Trail
The Washington Post
By Michael D. Shear
The latest Republican heavy weight to endorse Sen. Barack Obama is Republican foreign policy "expert" Kenneth Adelman. Michael D Shear reports in the Trail that Adelman told the New Yorker's George Packer that he found McCain all over the place on the economic crisis, ?"impetuous, inconsistent, and imprudent; ending up just plain weird." He concluded that after working with Ronald Reagan on numerous summits, a President McCain can not act under pressure. Adelman was a part of George Bush's defense agency and held senior policy positions under Presidents Reagan, Ford and Nixon. He did break however, with VP Cheney and Defense secretary Rumsfeld over the Iraq war.
