Oprah Obligingly Opts Out of Opulent Obama Observance
Top of the Ticket

By Andrew Malcolm

Top daytime talk-show host Oprah Winfrey intends to "blend in with the expected crowd of 70,000+" at the Democratic National Convention two weeks from now, according to Andrew Malcolm at the L.A. Times' Top of the Ticket. The O has decided to "skip the spotlight at her man Barack Obama's big acceptance speech on the Denver football field" because she's "afraid she'd draw away some of the natural luminescence of his nomination event that officially starts the fall's general election campaign against presumed Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, who'll be nominated a week later in St. Paul," Malcolm writes. The Ticket suggests that the celeb's shyness at the DNC "may also have to do with the fact that she and her No. 1 show apparently paid a price in popularity for taking such a prominent political stance starting last year."

McCain vs. Bush: Russians in Georgia

"While the White House was busy 'setting the record straight' on the (Wall Street) Journal's editorial lashing of the president for his handling of the sudden Russian incursion of Georgia, McCain was locking down the Op-ed page of the Journal with his essay today: 'We are all Georgians,'" said Mark Silva at The Chicago Tribune's The Swamp. In the essay, McCain notes that "history is often made in remote, obscure places," and that "the world has learned at great cost the price of allowing aggression against free nations to go unchecked," according to Silva's post.

According to Obama's presidential campaign Web site, the Illinois senator has tapped into the pockets of two million contributors -- a feat achieved with the help of former vice president Al Gore, who "urged his supporters to help Obama get over that 2 million mark," said Mark Memmott at The USA Today's On Politics. "2,000,000 people making history" was the headline on the camp's site this morning.

According to Foon Rhee at The Boston Globe's Political Intelligence, Powell, who split with Bush over the war in Iraq, made the statement after Kristol said on Fox News Channel that he had heard otherwise from "people who talk directly to the Obama campaign."

Cindy McCain Treated for Wrist Sprain
The Trail
The Washington Post
By Kimberly Kindy and Robert Barnes

"Many of you are wondering about Cindy's new attire," John McCain told the press yesterday at a media availability in West Bloomfield, Mich. But the Arizona senator wasn't talking about his wife's apparel, instead he was referring to the "blue sling decorated with a rhinestone pin," according to Kimberly Kindy and Robert Barnes at The Washington Post's The Trail. McCain went on to explain that "an individual shook her hand very vigorously at the last event we were at," re-injuring a wrist that was broken and operated on years ago.
