USA Today
By Mark Memmott
Bet you didn't know McCain ever held the nickname "Hell's Angel." As reported in today's Chicago Tribune, the Arizona senator earned the title after he and other prisoners of war staged a riot when their captors prohibited them from worshiping together. According to Mark Memmott at the USA Today's On Politics, the article "features a long look at Republican presidential candidate John McCain's religious views, with extensive comments from the candidate himself. ? Among the things McCain says about the effect being a prisoner had on his faith: 'There were many times I didn't pray for another day and I didn't pray for another hour -- I prayed for another minute to keep going.'"

"A top strategist for Sen. John McCain's campaign said Thursday that the presidential contest in Virginia will 'undoubtedly be close' this fall and acknowledged that the state should no longer be considered a Republican stronghold," according to Tim Craig at The Washington Post's The Trail. The statement came from McCain's political director, Mike DuHaime, and is the "latest signal that Virginia is emerging as a state that could make or break McCain's chances to defeat Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the presumptive Democratic nominee," said Craig.
Reading the Tea Leaves in Convention SpeakersThe Washington Wire
The Wall Street Journal
By Susan Davis
Veep selection speculation continues to continue, as the DNC committee recently announced Wednesday night's convention lineup. According to Susan Davis at The Wall Street Journal's The Washington Wire, the list includes "several pols rumored to be on the prospective running mate list: Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Joe Biden of Delaware and, to a lesser extent, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico." Davis points out that while the announcement might mean that those names aren't going to show up on the ticket, the Illinois senator could still select one of them as his VP, adding "but doesn't that seem like an awfully elaborate head fake?" Check out Davis' post for a more complete list of Wednesday night's speakers.

Orlando is a location appearing in both McCain and Obama's agendas for next week, as they seek to "show some love to the nation's veterans," according to Jim Stratton at the Chicago Tribune's The Swamp. While details of the trip have yet to be released, the presidential hopefuls will speak at the Veterans of Foreign Wars annual convention at the Orange County Convention Center. According to Stratton, "McCain is expected to speak to the group -- numbering 10,000 or more -- on Monday, with Obama due in town the next day. A VFW official confirmed their appearances, adding that President Bush had been invited as well."
Jackson Browne Sues McCain Over Song UseTop of the Ticket
Los Angeles Times
By Geoff Boucher
Jackson Browne, "one of rock music's most famous activists for liberal causes, is 'incensed' that the presumptive Republican candidate for president has been using Browne's signature 1977 song 'Running on Empty' in campaign commercials," according to Geoff Boucher at the L.A. Times' Top of the Ticket. Apparently, Browne filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against both McCain and the RNC -- however, Boucher notes that "they may be suing the wrong people." According to Top of the Ticket, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said that "the ad in question is not a McCain campaign ad but one put together by the Ohio Republican Party."
