By: Emily Vaughan Hillary Clinton's surprisingly huge losses in the Potomac primaries are bad news for the New York senator and make the upcoming primaries in Texas and Ohio crucial for her campaign. Chris Cillizza at washingtonpost.com's The Fix offers these tips for the Clinton camp: focus on the economy, make headlines, play up the internet donations, and win in Wisconsin, by a lot. Not too hard, right?
Andrew Malcolm at the L.A. Times' Top of the Ticket thinks John McCain might be a step ahead of the Democrats in figuring out who is opponent will be in November. The Arizona senator directed his Potomac primaries victory speech at Obama, telling the audience, hope "is a powerful thing. I can attest to that better than many, for I have seen men's hopes tested in hard and cruel ways that few will every experience."
Obama and McCain may both be winners in last night's primaries, but McCain, who mathematically cannot be beaten for the primary, is still battling it out with Mike Huckabee. Mark Silva at the Chicago Tribune's The Swamp suggests that this race isn't over yet, as McCain's close victories in Virginia show the level of discontent with some Republicans over his candidacy.
Now that Obama has made inroads into Clinton demographics, he's working for her core, the Latino vote. In the make or break March 4 primaries in Texas and Ohio, the Hispanic vote is essential to both candidates, and Obama's new Spanish-language radio ad released in Texas is trying to sway them in his favor, says Sarah Wheaton at The New York Times' The Caucus.
Obama, who many are calling the new frontrunner, is set to make a speech at General Motors in Detroit today about his plans for the economy. Big on the list is a "National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank" that would invest $60 billion over 10 years and create two million jobs, reports Mark Memmott at USA Today's On Politics. How's he going to pay for it? End the war in Iraq and stop "trying to put Iraq back together and start spending the money on putting America back together."
